Whether you want to lose weight, gain weight, write a book or reach any personal or business goal, here is something that will keep you on track, even on those days that you may want to give up. I call it an Accountability Associate. There is no better way to achieve something than to know that someone else is going to ask you if you followed through with what you said you were going to do!
It can be a friend, a member of an Internet group you belong to, a partner, a parent, or a personal or business coach. To use this technique, make your actions specific and measurable, for example, “I’m going to read five blog posts about how to teach an online course for profit, then document that I completed this task in an email to my Accountability Associate by Wednesday at 5pm.”
That way your Accountability Associate will be able to quickly determine if you achieved that goal. I have to confess, there have been times when I really had to hustle because I waited until the last minute to do what I promised, but wanted to save face by telling my Accountability Associate that I completed it rather than not keep my word. Keep in mind that there are emergency situations and family situations that can pop up and prevent you from completing a goal on time, and that is totally understandable. An accountability Associate is there to hold you accountable, but not to make you feel bad if you do not make your commitment. A good accountability Associate will cheer you on when you succeed or provide tips and words of encouragement that will help you complete your goal when you do not.
If you don’t already have an Accountability Associate, you may find one as you begin to share your achievements and goals with others. If someone gets excited for you or mentions that they always thought about doing the same thing that you are doing, ask them if they would like to help you stay accountable and you could offer to return the favor.
